Michael J. Shumacher (Washington DC, 1961)

Komponist, Performance- und Installationskünstler Michael J. Schumacher arbeitet vorwiegend mit elektronischen und digitalen Medien, wobei er auf computergenerierte Klangumgebungen spezialisiert ist, die sich über lange Zeiträume kontinuierlich entwickeln. Für die Umsetzung benutzt Schumacher Lautsprecherkonfigurationen, die die Klänge der Installationen zur Architektur des Ausstellungsraumes in Beziehung setzen. So werden architektonische und akustische Überlegungen zu grundlegenden Strukturelementen.

Schumacher’s Klanginstallationen waren schon weltweit an verschiedenen Orten zu hören: Art in General, Apex Art, Queens Museum, The Kitchen und Sculpture Center in New York City, CCNOA in Brüssel, Technische Universität und Podewil in Berlin, Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Lyon, Triskel Arts Center in Cork (Irland), Transmission Festival in Chicago, SFIFEM in Santa Fe, Waveform Festival in Sydney, Via 7 Festival in Paris, toon Festival in Harlem u.a.. Schumacher’s Komposition „Grid“, eine computergenerierte Partitur, die sich in Echtzeit entwickelt, wurde in New York, Barcelona und Houston ausgestellt. Sein Projekt „Living Room Pieces“ ist in einem Appartment des Chelsea Hotels permanent installiert. Dort läuft es 24 Stunden am Tag, wobei kontinuierlich neue Strukturen generiert werden.

Schumacher hat sechs Solo CDs, eine Duo CD mit Donald Miller und eine LP mit Miller und Charles Curtis veröffentlicht. Er ist in der Sub Rosa Anthology of noise and electronic music, in der lower case 2002 Kompilation und auf einer LP des Labels Staubgold mit Remixes von Musik von Oren Ambarchi vertreten. Schumacher’s CD „Room Pieces“, erschienen bei XI Records, wurde vom Magazin The Wire zur besten CD in der Kategorie „zeitgenössische Komposition“ erklärt. Kürzlich gab XI Records ein Set von fünf Klanginstallationen als Computeranwendungen heraus. Diese können auf einen Computer installiert und über bis zu acht Lautsprecher abgespielt werden, um so zuhause Klangumgebungen entstehen zu lassen.

Schumacher ist zusammen mit Nisi Jacobs der Gründer von DRAW (http://drawnyc.com), einer Audio-Video Performance Gruppe. Gemeinsam mit Tim Keiper, Alex Watermann, Bruce Andrews und anderen erzeugen sie zur Kontemplation einladende Live Sets, die auf kollaborativen Kompositionen basieren.

Schumacher unterrichtete am Bard College, in der New School, in der School for Visual Arts und in Julliard. Momentan lehrt er in der Polytechnic University in Brooklyn.
